Success Stories of TWI

Success Stories - Job Relations Trianing in Action
As you can see from the success stories for JM and JI, companies recognize the value in training their people in Job Instruction and Job Methods to build a foundation for standardized work while realizing an immediate ROI. Certified TWI Trainers Richard Abercrombie and Kirk Wardell now have the opportunity to showcase the true value of TWI Job Relations Training, as each of them work with companies to train their people how to build positive employee relations to keep problems from happening before moving forward with the change initiative. Since both have just started down this path, Richard and Kirk will keep you up to date as they continue to work with the following companies over the next several months.

The company decided to focus more on JR training after starting down this path and we look forward to hearing from Richard and our friends at Weber on the results.

TWI Success
NIXON GEAR, Inc.
Syracuse, NY Certified TWI Trainer - Kirk Wardell

Nixon Gear manufactures custom precision gearing for high speed applications primarily for original equipment manufacturers east of the Mississippi. The company invests heavily in state of the art equipment and now has one of the industry's most modern complements of gear machines and support equipment in a modern 45,000 sq. ft. building with 60 full time people. Nixon Gear recently completed a major Lean Manufacturing initiative, including the formation of work cells, that give their people a voice in how to continually improve processes and reduce inventory. As expected, some people resisted the culture aspects of Lean Manufacturing. Management learned that ever when people wanted to improve, they simply did not have improvement skills necessary and that would cause people to backslide and abandon improvements. Several people from Nixon Gear had participated in the initial TDO TWI pilot projects in 2001, and looking back on that experience, management decided to visit Gray-Syracuse (See JI Success Story). There they were able to talk with people in the workplace who credited TWI for teaching them about how to act responsibly, to strive to decide their own fate and to act with self-reliance with trust in their own abilities. Having decided that TWI was the missing ingredient in their Lean initiative, management decided to first improve upon what is already a good work environment at Nixon Gear. Kirk will introduce the TWI program with Job Relations Training for their key people to learn how to quickly solve the people problems that will arise and, more importantly, how to prevent problems from happening to begin with. Once down the path to building more positive employee relations and higher morale, Kirk will deliver Job Instruction and Job Methods to put people in an improvement frame of mind and to ultimately to take ownership for standard work. This project is a combination of TWI training and implementation spread over a six month period. Kirk will share his experience and the feedback from Nixon Gear as the project unfolds.
